He's almost 9 months old and I thought they were never going to make an appearance. I checked this morning and there was nada, but just now I felt a sharp little pointy tooth! You can just barely see it coming up from the gums. When it's all the way out, I'll post cute baby photos for you guys.

My baby's growing up!!

update: 17 Sept
Now his top left tooth has broken the skin and the right looks like it might any day now. The bottom is still slowly making it's way out. Poor baby, no teeth at all and then 3 decide to come in at once.

My Attachment Parenting Blog
My Photography BlogMiranda - Tech Divhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00071886928632075552noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8150671326453654258.post-70753859442868657922008-08-30T19:09:00.000-07:002008-08-30T19:11:19.137-07:00Braden's New Trainset

My Attachment Parenting Blog
My Photography BlogMiranda - Tech Divhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00071886928632075552noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8150671326453654258.post-84485762523727207002008-08-22T14:16:00.000-07:002009-05-31T16:59:15.366-07:00My new photography blog!Hello everyone! Here's the details:
Here's how it works: Take a picture of your baby discovering something new for the first time. It can be anything from eating ice cream to playing with a musical instrument to touching a furry pet. Upload your photo along with a short caption describing your child's moment of discovery before September 15th. Five winners will receive an all-expense-paid trip to New York City to be photographed for the December American Baby issue. One lucky Grand Prize winner will appear on the December American Baby cover.

How fantastic and fun would that be? If you'd like to help, please visit this link and rate Braden's photos. Also, if you could click the link above the rating that says "Recommend" that would awesome! Here's a look at the ones I entered.

<img style="border: 1px solid rgb(204, 204, 204); Braden has been a very distractable little boy lately. When he does settle down to eat, he pinches and grabs and hits; no fun for mommy! So she let me use her necklace to see if that would help focus him. Worked beautifully! Today she took me to this cute cute cute little bead shop in Tacoma. Luff that place, wow they've got gorgeous stuff there. So I bought my supplies and we high-tailed it outta there.

Here's the basics of what I got and how I did it.

1 yard of leather cord
8 inches of thin wire
1 tiny metal loop
2 tiny metal (joiners/fasteners? Anyway it slips over the wire and you squish it and it holds it shut)
handful of assorted pretty beads

I pulled the cord through the tiny metal loop and made sure it was in the middle. Then, with both halves of the strings held together, I looped it around itself to make a knot in the middle of the cord around the metal loop leaving the ends free. Then I took my wire and started adding beads. I put my middle bead on first, then added from each end to make sure it was symmetrical. When I had put all my beads on, I slid the metal fasteners on the end of the wire, pulled the free end back through the fastener one more time (so the end formed a loop) and clamped it shut. Repeat on the other end. Lastly, I gently opened the metal loop that was on the end of my cord and slipped my wire loops through it. When tying the ends of the cord, remember to make it big enough to slip easily over your head. Complicated sounding right? It's not, I just suck at explaining things. I can't even begin to tell you how much more enjoyable cloth is than disposables. The first month I was using 'sposies diaper changes were something to be done quickly and gotten over with. Buying them was depressing, and heaven forbid the baby pooped right after a change, there goes $$ down the drain. Cloth though? Wow! Changing time is so fun, picking out a diaper to match the days' outfit, accessorizing with some cute Babylegs, maybe even go for gold and match it all with your diaper bag ;) Shopping for diapers has become an addiction. I found myself stalking new posts on Diaperswappers waiting for someone to sell the coveted Blueberry Minky OS at a cheap price. (Which I did finally find, yay!) I love that it doesn't matter how many diapers I use a day, or how many wipes it takes to clean up that poop explosion, because it's all going into the wash and not into a landfill.

Places to shop:
A few of my favorite places to shop for dipes, both practical and cute.
Diaperswappers.com - A forum for parents to buy, sell and trade.
Etsy - For all things handmade
Hyena Cart - Cloth diapering mecca

Side note, some of these great shops take Revolution Money Exchange (RME) like Paypal, but without the fees. Sign up now and get a free $25. That's free diapers!
Wash routine:
Here is how I take care of my diapers. It's really much easier than you would think. When you take off the dirty diaper, toss the whole thing into your wetbag and forget about it 'til laundry day. If your baby is exclusively breastfed, it's all water soluble. Just use an extra rinse at the beginning of your wash. (Another great reason to breastfeed!!! By all means, if you've got questions about breastfeeding, please contact me) Once your baby is 6+ months old and you've added solids to their diet, you can purchase a sprayer that attaches to the toilet to get the solids off. None of that toilet dunking you may have heard about! Eww *wink* My wash day goes like this:

Dump all the diapers out near the washer

Turn on a cold rinse

Remove inserts from the diaper, toss it all in

After that rinse, start a hot wash/cold rinse

Add 1/2 a capful of detergent (See this site for lists of cloth diaper safe detergents, a great source for cloth diaper information)

After that's done, run one more cold rinse to make sure the detergent residue is out

Dry on medium heat

And that's it! When they're dry I stuff my pockets so they're ready to go when I need to change a diaper. It couldn't be easier.

I'm a big fan of "one-sized" diapers that grow with your baby, but there are also great choices that are sized. Like these: Green Acre Designs. To learn how to measure your baby, click here.

And finally, I'd like to share a couple photos of my "stash". I'm so excited to get this thing in the mail I think it's going to be gorgeous. Here's the patterns I ordered. The caramel border is the strap color and the carrier is reversible with Surf & Sand paisley on one side and Owl Paisley Pink on the other. Yes I'm planning ahead in-case I ever have a little girl :)

My Attachment Parenting BlogMiranda - Tech Divhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00071886928632075552noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8150671326453654258.post-41875253552917011662008-05-11T12:41:00.000-07:002008-05-11T12:49:03.850-07:00My cloth diaper GADs came!Green Acre Designs: http://www.greenacredesigns.com/store/WsDefault.asp?Cat=DiapersCovers
So here's lots of pics!

My Attachment Parenting BlogMiranda - Tech Divhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00071886928632075552noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8150671326453654258.post-16176945117858216292008-05-09T14:57:00.000-07:002008-05-09T15:30:47.380-07:00I was the image of domestic bliss todayI finally got around to tackling the mountain of laundry that had been piling up. When it was all washed and folded, I carried my baskets upstairs and opened the curtains in the bedroom. It was a beautiful day outside, sunny and bright. I put my 4 1/2 month old in his pack-n-play bassinet that's by the bed, turned the TV towards it and popped in the Baby Einstein Brad's sister loaned us.

I felt rather June Cleaverish standing by the bed hanging up my husband's shirts and putting away all the folded things; all I was missing was the retro dress. I'll have to admit it felt kinda good, we've been accumulating clutter since the baby was born and getting it cleared away is refreshing.

My Attachment Parenting Blog

What's unusual about this picture is pretty much everything. Usually the bassinet is buried under mounds of my laundry. Braden doesn't sleep there, he sleeps with me. The other thing is that I'm not a huge fan of letting a baby watch TV and really hate having one in my bedroom, but my husband was becoming a little depressed about the state of the house, so it was nice to have something the baby could enjoy while I worked.

Miranda - Tech Divhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00071886928632075552noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8150671326453654258.post-38267150896278014562008-04-20T17:11:00.000-07:002008-04-20T17:16:48.551-07:00Sorry it's been so long!Things have been pretty busy around here lately. It is what we as mothers and fathers would do without the social pressure and stigma of "spoiling" or creating "dependant" children. The phrase was popularized by Dr. Robert Sears and his wife Martha. They are the authors of many parenting books ranging from The Breastfeeding Book to The Vaccine Book. The Sears are joined by many respected professionals in advocating for a more loving, gentle style of raising our youth.

Attachment parenting is not a rigid set of rules like many other mainstream philosophies. It is in fact defined by its fluid message of simple love and respect. Everyone ultimately will find a system that works the best for their own family. AP is about listening to your baby's cues, and responding in a way that promotes a secure bond.

Many people consider babywearing, breastfeeding and co-sleeping to be the foundation, or building blocks, to the AP lifestyle.

Breastfeeding

This is the cornerstone to natural parenting with attachment in mind. Breastfeeding provides all the nutrition, hydration, immunity, comfort and love that your baby will need in the first months of their life. It truly is the best start you can give them. Breastfeeding is much much more than just food. The relationship between you and your child becomes the most important thing for both of you. It is the best way to soothe your baby to sleep, the best way to calm a fussy baby, and the best way to ensure that a lot of time is spent held, cuddling and loving them.

Co-sleeping

If breastfeeding is the cornerstone, this is the mortar of AP. Night-time Parenting is really what sets attachment parenting apart. Our jobs as parents does not end when the sun goes down. It is not in a baby's best interest to be separated from its caregivers at night. We must continue to provide nourishment, closeness and comfort round the clock. Co-sleeping is a key element in the breastfeeding relationship. At night, mom can simply help her baby latch on and continue to get her much needed rest without ever leaving the bed. It is the in and out of bed at night that causes terrible sleep-deprivation in new parents and it is really unnecessary. You will find that it is when you attempt to go against the grain of natural instinct that everything in life becomes so much harder and more difficult.

Babywearing

Your little one spent nine months safely wrapped inside your body. S/he was warm and comforted by your continuing presence and movement. Babywearing allows for a smoother transition to the outside world for your child. Carriers allow them to continue to benefit from being close to you, they love to be next to your body, smelling your scent, and delight in your motions as you go about daily life. Babies cry less and get the sleep that they need when they are worn by their parents. Mommies get the benefit of being able to continue to care for older children, their homes and many other tasks that would normally be much more difficult or even impossible with their new bundles.

Ultimately, attachment parenting tries to get at the heart of what feels natural and right to us as mothers and fathers. It fosters happy, healthy children who know without a doubt that someone is always there for them when they fall and lets them become secure and outgoing when they're older.

My Attachment Parenting BlogMiranda - Tech Divhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00071886928632075552noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8150671326453654258.post-3123967186071790542008-04-07T11:29:00.000-07:002008-04-08T13:57:05.121-07:00You make my Day!Wow! You can find my first post discussing concerns with the current vaccination schedule here.

This time, I will break down the highlights of what I have found concerning each of the vaccines on the recommended schedule. I will try to include as many of the resources I have used as I can in order to help you do the same research should you choose to. I will also provide two modified AAP refusal forms and links where you can find information regarding your states school/daycare exemption forms. At the end, I will provide my alternate-delayed vaccination schedule.

First, let's start with the basic premise of what I wanted to achieve. I wanted to delay beginning the shots until my baby's immune system had time to develop. I didn't know exactly when this should be, it will be a decision you will have to make for yourself, but for me, starting at one year of age is what I am comfortable with. The second goal was that he not receive more than one or two vaccinations at any given visit. This is in an effort to make sure his system is not overloaded with the chemicals and additives in the shots all at once. It also gives me the opportunity to pinpoint which vaccination caused any potential reactions.

On to the meat and potatoes.

Vaccines required for school/daycare by Washington State:
(Try googling for your state's requirements.)

Hepatitis B (HepB)- Final verdict: No
This one was easy for me. Hepatitis B is a sexually transmitted disease that requires direct exchange of bodily fluids to contract. I see absolutely no reason why a baby should be subjected to this shot when the mother is HepB negative. In the future when my son is sexually active, I believe that education and discussion on the responsibility of safe sex will be far more important than a vaccine.

Diptheria, Tetanus, acellular Pertussis (DTaP)- Final verdict:Yes
This one took a very long time for me to sort through and decide on. Truthfully, the deciding factor on the yes for this one was my husband. He feels this is an important one to have even having read all the sources I've shown him. One thing I know we won't be doing is frequent boosters once the series is done. It's been shown that the over-vaccination against things like tetanus actually harms your bodies ability to fight the disease. Here a bunch of resources for DTaP if you want to look into it more yourself.

Inside Vaccines: DTaP

Pertussis hospitalization among infants

Components of DTaP vaccine- If you do decide on this one, this link helps you choose which brand to use

Polio (IPV)- Final Verdict: Yes
When I researched this vaccine, the information I could find on it suggests that the version we use in the US today (inactivated polio virus) does not actually prevent someone from getting the wild version of polio. What it does do is prevent it from affecting the central nervous system should you contract polio and therefore nullifying the most serious side effect of the disease; i.e paralysis. I know there haven't been any cases of wild polio in the US since 1999, but the side effects of this particular vaccine are mild and I feel the benefits outweigh the risks in this case should there ever be an outbreak or we travel.

Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)- Final Verdict: ??
Sorry guys. The jury is still out on this one. I had hoped to come to a decision on this one before I posted but I'll save it for a later date. This is the big scary one that's linked to all the autism claims and there is a vast amount of material out there on this one and I haven't been able to sort through it yet. Here are some sites that may help you.

Thrower MMR

MDC's MMR vaccination archives

Varicella (Chickenpox)- Final Verdict: No
This one is a joke in my most humble opinion. Chickenpox is harmless, causes no long lasting side effects in healthy children and the worst to come out of it is missing a few days school. I see no need to introduce chemicals with potentially greater harm to my child's system than the disease it protects against.

Other vaccinations on the CDC's recommended schedule

Haemophilus Influenza type B (HiB)- Final Verdict: No
This one is about why it's best to leave nature to run its course. Our bodies are symbiotic with many bacteria. They keep each other in balance and ensure that we remain healthy. Diseases and sickness occur when one kind of bacteria grows too much or moves to an area of the body it shouldn't be. Inside Vaccines has more detailed information regarding this phenomena. My other reason behind declining this one is that my baby is exclusively breastfed. The antibodies in breastmilk protect and encourage the natural growth of a child's bacterial flora ecosystem.

Pneumococcal (Prevnar) (PCV)- Final Verdict: No
This vaccine operates along the same lines as the HiB. Destroy one bacteria and another moves in to take its place. In this case the bacteria that is allowed to flourish in absentia is Staphylococcus aureus. Hmm...no thanks. Oh and ear infections? Yeah my breastmilk has that covered. See this article and the previous one from Inside Vaccines linked earlier.

Influenza (Flu)- Final Verdict: No
Another no brainer for me. I don't get a flu shot every year, why should I make my child get one? I think the human immune system does a great job on it's own of taking care of small things like the flu. There are way too many strains of influenza for the flu shot to even make a difference. He cries and cries, the volume approaches a scream at times. His little face turns red and his body gets stiff. He kicks and squirms, and there are tears! Real baby tears. A crying baby makes my heart hurt. I try nursing to comfort him, but he just jerks and pulls away. Holding him and talking to him doesn't help either. There are a few things thankfully that do help, such as walking around with him....ok perhaps the word few was overestimating things. Walking is just about the only thing that works without fail. Even wearing him in my baby carrier only works if I'm up moving around.

Without fail, every night when my husband and I try to sit down for dinner, the screaming starts. I'm not a superwoman, sometimes I feel truly ready to just give up and put him in his swing and let him cry it out. I just can't do it, though. I can't sit and listen to him need me and not go and at least try to comfort him however futile my efforts may be. Last night my dear husband made us a steak and sauted mushrooms dinner. Halfway through I just got up and held the baby and nursed standing while Brad finished his dinner. Then I sat down and ate my cold steak :( I know I feel kind of sorry for myself as this happens a lot, but I'm the mother now and I guess sacrifices must be made.

It's been particularly bad the last few days and I've almost felt at my wits end. I've yelled at my husband which helps nothing. I know that, but I get so frazzled by the baby's constant crying. I went looking for answers on the internet the other day and found that 3 months of age is prime time for a growth spurt. I broke down in tears after reading that, thankful that this may end in a few days and I'll have a happy baby. The thing is, sometimes he is happy! The few times a day he's happy he knows how to show it. He smiles up a storm, coos and lets out huge giggles. I love these moments and I hope for more of them.

I also found some really helpful information on high needs babies by Dr. Robert Sears. The Sears' also have a book titled, The Fussy Baby Book : Parenting Your High-Need Child From Birth to Age Five. I'm thinking of buying it because it seems as if this article was written specifically for Braden. Some of the key points that really struck a cord with me were:
High need infants tend to be full-time tummy-thumpers and bladder- kickers, as if telling the world even before they're born that they need more space.
Boy was he ever! Man I thought he was gonna kick right out of my ribcage some nights. Not fun, ha! I had no idea what was coming.
They stiffen their limbs and arch their backs when you try to hold them, and they are frequently seen doing back dives in your lap, turning breastfeeding into a gymnastic event.
This drives me up the wall sometimes. I thought that nursing was supposed to be a peaceful loving thing, but sometimes Braden fights it! He squirms, arches his back, tries to kick himself off my lap. I feel bad "forcing" him to nurse but he needs to eat and he needs to sleep and this is really my only way of helping him do those things.
Woe to the parent who offers baby the rattle when he is expecting a breast. He will let you know quickly and loudly that you've misread his cues.
Tell me about it. Heaven forbid I try to change his diaper after a nap when he wants to eat...or try to hold him in my lap when he wants attention and to play. Sometimes just figuring out exactly what it is he wants is a trial. Often, I don't get it right and I'm left with my crying, red, upset baby.
After all, isn't a contented baby the hallmark of effective mothering? Wrong! There will be days when you nurse, rock, walk, drive, wear, and try every comforting technique known to man or woman, and nothing will work. Don't take this as a sign of failure. You do the best you can, and the rest is up to the baby. You have not failed as a mother even if your baby is miserable much of the time.
Thank God! Honestly, yes I was feeling like a little bit of a failure. I co-sleep with him, I breastfeed frequently and on demand, I play with him as much as I can and he still has periods of uncontrolled screaming. Just about the only thing in this article that doesn't really fit my baby is the poor sleep habits. He sleeps great which is a small miracle I give credit to co-sleeping for. I am so glad that I am not alone. Thank you Dr. Sears!

Here is something very similar to a comment my husband made a little while back. He said that it was as if Braden only had "off" and "on". There is either super happy smiling giggling baby, or super upset crying, kicking baby.
When he is happy, he is the happiest baby around, but when he is angry he is the worst baby around. He is still that way, sunshine and smiles, anger and daggers. He has no middle emotion.
So here I am, with my potentially "high needs" baby. I'm doing the best I can trying to parent him, to make him understand that I will be there for him when he is upset and I will always pick him up when he falls. I truly believe that being an attachment parenting mommy for this little guy is going to help be his safety net. He will be able to grow and be an outgoing, driven happy little guy because he knows his mommy loves him.

Do you have a high needs baby?
What tips and tricks have you learned?
What are they like as older children?

My Attachment Parenting BlogMiranda - Tech Divhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00071886928632075552noreply@blogger.com6
